Holloman coming home to coach South Pointe Football

South Pointe High School has selected DeVonte Holloman to lead the Stallions tradition-rich football program. He becomes the third head coach in the 13-year history of the school.

“We had many well-qualified candidates apply for the job, but after the interviews one of them rose to the top and we are very excited to bring a former South Pointe football player back to The Corral to serve as our head coach,” said South Pointe athletic director Adam Hare. “Coach Holloman comes with a new energy and outlook that will help motivate all of our student-athletes.”

Holloman, a 2009 graduate of South Pointe and member of the school’s first undefeated season and state championship in 2008, returns to coach the Stallions after spending the past four seasons at Beaufort High School where he was head coach this past fall.

“I am extremely excited to return to my alma mater as the head football coach of South Pointe High School; a football powerhouse, known for a rich tradition of football excellence,” Holloman said. “As a former student-athlete at South Pointe, it is a blessing and honor to return home and lead our scholar-athletes to success both on and off the field.”

Following his success at South Pointe, he went on to star for the University of South Carolina where he was a stand out on the field and in the classroom earning a spot on the Butkus Award Pre-Season Watch List, Dean's List and Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. On the field, he totaled 150 tackles and four interceptions playing linebacker and safety for the Gamecocks.

He was drafted in the 6th round by the Dallas Cowboys in 2013 and is one of three Stallions to be drafted in the NFL. Teammates Stephon Gilmore and Jadeveon Clowney were also drafted to the NFL. Gilmore, one of the top defensive backs in the NFL, played in yesterday's Super Bowl as a starter with the New England Patriots. Holloman played in nine games, starting in four, at linebacker and amassed 26 tackles and two sacks in his only full season with America’s Team in 2013.

“DeVonte was a high character, model player that demonstrated outstanding leadership,” said former Cowboys and current Oakland Raiders assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia. “He knows the game and I see him becoming an exceptional high school football coach.”

After his NFL career was cut short due to injury, Holloman returned to Columbia where he spent one season as a graduate assistant coach with the Gamecocks. At South Carolina, he worked with former defensive coordinator and current Louisville head coach Lorenzo Ward.

“We are excited to welcome home Mr. Holloman along with his family. Mr. Holloman brings with him a wealth of knowledge and skills both as a player on every level as well as a coach,” said Rock Hill Schools superintendent Dr. Bill Cook. “We believe he will continue the level of excellence that South Pointe and the Rock Hill community is accustom to while ensuring our student-athletes maintain a strong focus on their academics and future.”

Holloman, who will turn 28 next Tuesday, will teach business and entrepreneurship classes at South Pointe and begins his new role and responsibilities immediately. He and his wife Angelina have two children, Brooklyn and Myles.
