First Grade is such an amazing grade! We set the foundation to instill lifelong learners and expand on the learning from kindergarten. For example, in Writing Workshop we expand on small moments; introduce informational books, opinion writing, and personal narratives. In Guided Reading and Readers Workshop, we target our lessons so that every child becomes a better reader. They understand that it is not just about reading words, but understanding what we read. In Math Workshop, we work on number sense and solving story problems using different strategies. Communities are alike and different around the world. Democracy and natural resources are the topics we cover in Social Studies. Last but not least, in Science, we learn all about light and shadows, the Sun and the Moon, Earth’s natural resources, and plants.
