Winthrop University - Undergraduate and Master’s Degree

Ms. Missy Whiting

Hi, my name is Susan Missy Whiting and I am a 5th grade teacher at York Road Elementary.  I have been teaching for 33 years and have taught Special Education, second, third, fourth and fifth grade.  I can truly say that fifth is my favorite!  I have currently been at York Road for thirteen years and work with safety patrol members and the recycling club. I was also selected as the York Road Teacher of the Year for the 2017-2018 school year.

I graduated from Winthrop University and received my undergraduate and Master’s Degree.  When I graduated, I taught a self-contained class at Edgewood Center and stayed there for three years.  The center was closed and I was moved to Sunset Park Elementary, where I still taught a special education class.  After that, I taught for ten years at Belleview Elementary and eventually moved to third grade.  While I was teaching, I was also coaching girls’ basketball at Rock Hill High School.  I coached JV and was the Varsity Assistant for eleven years.

I had my twin girls in 1999 and continued teaching third grade at Belleview.  In 2003, my family moved to Columbia SC, where I took a second grade job at Rice Creek Elementary.  We stayed for 5 years, then we moved back to Rock Hill, where I took a 5th grade job at York Road.

I am adjusting to a different life. My daughter, Sara, graduated from Midlands Technical College in May 2019, with a degree in paralegal studies. She is living and working full time for a law firm in Columbia. Brooke graduated from Newberry College in 2021. She will be working on her Masters degree at USC Columbia. I have two dogs, Miles and Melody that keep me company.  I live within a few minutes from my mother and visit often.  We like to get together with my brothers and their families and take vacations to the beach. Some of my favorite activities include reading suspense books, and watching the Investigating Discovery Channel.

Besides the short time I lived in Columbia, I have always lived in Rock Hill. I still keep in touch with lots of friends that I attended school with and even plan my Rock Hill High School reunions. I love catching up with people that no longer live in Rock Hill, but I’ve known since elementary age. My goal for my students is for them to have a positive experience in school like I did.
