Mr. Michael Small

All About Mr. Small!

My name is Michael S. Small, Jr., and I am a native of Cheraw, SC. This is my eighth-year teaching, and I have taught second grade through sixth grade. I am also an adjunct professor at Coker University, my alma mater, teaching math methods courses to preservice teachers.

This school year, I am ecstatic to be teaching eighth grade math. Math has always been a passion of mine, and I hope to continue spreading the love of math with my students this year as I have done in the past.

Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family. Additionally, I enjoy singing, taking care of my plants, graphic design, and playing my video games.

What is your reason WHY?

The reason I teach -- my "why" -- is two-fold:
(1) I never had a teacher that looked like me until I had an JROTC instructor in high school. I went from kindergarten through twelfth grade without seeing a person that looks like me in an academic setting. So, my first why is that REPRESENTATION MATTERS!

(2) I am passionate about math education. I want the world we live in to be full of mathematically numerate citizens. I want to debunk the idea that math is hard or that some people aren't "math people". Math is "figureoutable", and it doesn't have to be a source of anxiety for people. Every student deserves to have a high-quality mathematics education.
