To help our learners in Rock Hill become passionate, confident readers and experience reading during summer vacation, Rock Hill Schools has partnered with Scholastic Books to provide “My Books Summer” for current students in grades pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. These students will have boxes of books and support materials mailed to their homes beginning the last week of June. Students in Grades PreK – 5 will receive their box of 10 books, containing both fiction and non-fiction titles, as well as a program guide with family resources, family engagement thinking sheets for each book, a summer reading journal, and writing materials. Students in Grades 6 – 8 will receive 5 books and associated support materials in each box.
The goals of the Rock Hill School District and “My Books Summer” include the following:
Encourage students to become life-long readers
Teach students how to think critically about what they are reading
Expose students to different types of authors and characters
Help students develop reading and writing skills through different books
We hope that the engaging, motivating packs of books the district has provided will offer our families the opportunity to spend quality time with their child while also strengthening their reading comprehension skills to help keep them reading at-level over summer vacation.
Rock Hill Schools will provide communication and literacy happenings on the district website www.rock-hill.k12.sc.us and communication tools throughout the month of July to support the love of reading within each home.
