K-2 Standards Based Grading

Rock Hill Schools uses standards-based grading for students in Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade.  Standards-based grading is a way to view student progress based on proficiency levels for each standard.   Rather than students receiving traditional grades, they will receive a rating for each standard within the subject area.

Using this standards-based grading system, specific standards are identified for the grading period, and students will receive a score within a standards-based scale ranging from 1-4 based on their performance on each standard. If a student doesn’t master a standard, the student is given multiple opportunities to learn the standard and then the teacher will reassess the standard. 

Standards Based Scale for K-2:

1 = Beginning: The child has limited mastery of the standard for this reporting period. The child needs significant support, such as extended time, to apply their knowledge and skills. 

2 = Developing: The child shows partial mastery of the standard for this reporting period. The child can demonstrate some success in tasks using this knowledge or skill but still needs some support. 

3 = Meeting: The child has mastered the grade level standard for this reporting period. The student can demonstrate their knowledge and skills independently, without support.  

4 = Exceeding: The child goes beyond grade level mastery for this reporting period for this standard. The child applies his/her knowledge and skills to develop new understandings and solutions.
