Read to Succeed
Reading: The Key to Your Child’s Success
Reading is one of the most important skills your child will learn in school—especially in third grade. This is the year your child moves from learning to read to reading to learn. Strong reading skills help them understand every subject, including math, science, and social studies.
Developing good reading habits now builds a foundation for lifelong learning, critical thinking, and future success.
What Is the Read to Succeed Act?
The Read to Succeed Act, originally passed in 2014 and updated in 2024, was created to make sure every student becomes a strong reader, ready for college, a career, or the military.
A key part of this law says that third-grade students who are significantly behind in reading may be retained (repeat the grade) at the end of the year.
According to Act 114, students who score “Does Not Meet Expectations” on the state reading test (SC Ready) must be retained. This gives struggling readers extra time and support to build essential skills.
How We Support Your Child
Our goal is to help your child become a confident, independent reader who is ready for fourth grade and beyond.
Students who are not reading on grade level will receive:
- At least 90 minutes of daily reading instruction
- Targeted interventions based on the science of reading
- Support tailored to their individual needs
