Mr. Kenton Simon

Degrees and Certifications:

Mr. Kenton Simon

I am excited to return to Sunset Park for the 2017-2018 school year!  I am fortunate because I get to work with all of the students at least once a week.  Although, I am the music teacher, I see my role at Sunset Park more so as an instructor who teaches life skills infused with music.  Music is such an integral part of our lives and what better tool to teach with?  Students at Sunset Park get to explore music through singing, playing instruments, dance, music creation, performances, chorus and honors chorus opportunities, and in so many other ways.  In my classroom and beyond, I create a safe environment for learning where students can try and learn new things, make mistakes, and be imaginative and creative, all while supporting one another.  I also strive to create innovative and relevant experiences that will impact my students and their families for the better.  As a child (and even as an adult), I have had many impactful and memorable experiences through music, and I strive to pay that forward!

Previously, I served for four years as the music teacher at Belleview Elementary School.  I have also served as director of the Elementary District Honors Choir of Rock Hill Schools.

I earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music (Piano Performance) from Coastal Carolina University (2008) and a Master of Arts in Teaching Degree (Music K-12) from Winthrop University (2011).

I love pretty much anything ART – music (of course), painting, cooking, interior design, building things -  by the way, I have my own handyman and carpentry business on the side, so if you need a handyman,….. well, I’ll leave it at that.  I also serve as the Minister of Music and Co-Youth Leader at Tabernacle of Praise Church International in York, SC.  I am married to the lovely Trekeelia Simon for almost 9 ½ years, and we have a pretty awesome son, Karter, who is 3 years old and quite the little drummer/ musician.  Yes, I know I’m biased, but truth is truth, right?!
