Mrs. Mary Freeman
My name is Mary Freeman, and I am the Literacy Coach at Independence Elementary. I was born and raised in Fernandina Beach, Fla. I moved to Rock Hill to attend college at Winthrop University. I graduated in May of 1998 with a B.S. In Elementary Education. A few years later, I graduated from Winthrop University with my Masters of Education in Reading. This year, I will begin my 20th year of teaching. I started my career teaching 2nd grade in Charleston County. I then taught 2nd grade at Chester Park Primary School for 5 years. When I moved to Independence, I taught 3rd grade for 3 years. After leaving the classroom, I taught Reading Recovery for 7 years and this will be my 4th year as a Literacy Coach.
I married my college sweetheart 1 month after graduating from Winthrop. We just celebrated our 19th wedding anniversary. We have two sons, Eric (14) and Porter (10). They keep us busy. Eric will be a freshman at Northwestern High School this year, Go Trojans!! Porter will be a 5th grader at York Road Elementary. They play football, baseball and basketball. You will find this mom on a bench anywhere my boys are playing, I am their biggest fan!! When I am not at school, I enjoy traveling, reading, shopping and spending time with my family and friends. This summer my husband and I made our 3rd trip to the Dominican Republic, the water and wildlife are amazing. We can't wait to go back.
We travel to many sporting events. Last season we made trips to Oklahoma to see Mason Rudolph and the OSU Cowboys play and to Dallas to see the Dallas Cowboys play! We also love to attend Gamecock Football games, both home and away!
I am looking forward to another amazing year with the students and staff at Independence. Go Patriots!
