Superintendent's Message

May 2012

Greetings from Rock Hill Schools:

In just a few weeks our school year will draw to a close. It seems that only weeks ago we were welcoming students to a new school year. Now on May 30 we will be saying goodbye to the thousands of students who have worked so hard this year and touched our hearts in so many ways. For those who will graduate, we wish them great success as they continue their education, enter the military, or join the workforce. And, for those who will return to us in the fall, we hope they will have a fun-filled summer but will continue to learn.

In preparing for the end of the school year, I'd like to share the following information:

Students and teachers will have holidays on May 18 and May 25. Besides the Memorial Day holiday, having holidays in May is unusual; but when the calendar was approved, these days were to be bad weather makeup days. Since we did not have to cancel school due to bad weather, May 18 and May 25 are now holidays.

The last two days for students, May 29 and May 30, will be half days. Elementary students will be dismissed at 11:00; middle school students will be dismissed at 12 noon; and high school students will be dismissed at 12:15. Dismissal times are based on our school bus transportation schedule.

High school graduations will be held on Saturday, June 2, in the Winthrop Coliseum. Northwestern's seniors will graduate at 10:00 while South Pointe's will graduate at 2:00 and Rock Hill High's, at 6:00.  Once again, thanks to Comporium and a number of business sponsors, all graduations will be televised "live" on Cable 114.

To those who have given of their time or resources to benefit our students, THANK YOU for supporting public education. To our extraordinary faculty and staff, THANK YOU for your commitment to our students and their needs. And, to our students, THANK YOU for your efforts this year in the classroom, on the athletic fields and on our stages. You have made those who work with you amazingly proud.

To everyone, enjoy your summer and I'll see you in August.
