Overview:  State and National Assessments

Grades 3-8

Palmetto Assessment of State Standards (PASS) - The Education Accountability Act of 1998 and the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) require the establishment of a performance-based accountability system. The PACT assessment program was developed for this purpose. PACT includes tests in four subject areas - ELA, mathematics, science, and social studies - for all students in grades three through eight.  Examples of the types of questions can be found at PASS Blueprints.

 High School

High School Assessment Program (HSAP) - The Education Accountability Act of 1998 also requires that each public school student pass an exit examination to receive a South Carolina high school diploma.  HSAP was developed for this purpose.  HSAP also measures students' academic achievement on high school standards in accordance with the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB).

End-of-Course-Examination Program (EOCEP) - The Education Accountability Act of 1998 also requires the development of end-of-course examinations in gateway or benchmark courses. The program is called The examinations, which count 20 percent of the students' final grade in each gateway or benchmark course, currently include: Algebra 1/Math for the Technologies 2, English 1, Physical Science, and  U.S. History and Constitution.  Blueprint for EOCEP for these subjects.

SAT and ACT - The SAT and ACT assess high school students' ability to complete college-level work.
